Shoreland stewardship
program

The Shoreland Stewardship Program

In 2018, the BLPS rolled out the Shoreland Stewardship Program.   In doing so, Black Lake joins a long list of differentiated lakes in our state that are part of this program.  This program is at the heart of the goals of the BLPS.  The health of our lake is simply a reflection of the treatment of the land surrounding the lake.  The BLPS can only impact what we, the property owners, renters, and visitors choose to do with our land and our behaviors and we enjoy the rich, natural, common asset that is Black Lake.  The more we know, the better stewards we become.

2019 Accomplishments

  • Promoted the self assessment survey through Facebook as a tool for learning and for generating your own project ideas on your property.  (use the button below to use the survey)
  • Introduced BLPS members to Natural Shorescapes Solutions as an inexpensive resource to highlight opportunities on your property.  (see Facebook Live sessions on our FB page)
  • Introduced our members to Jennifer Buchanan from the Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council as a resource to offer free native planting advice.
  • Conducted a before/after and lessons learned discussion from the shoreline project done at the home of members Gil and Brenda Archambo.

2020 Plans

  • Continue to promote the shoreline self assessment with our members
  • Continue to share best practices for shoreline strengthening and and native plant landscape designs
  • Provide expanded lists and links for service providers (e.g. native plants, lake-safe landscaping, shoreline strengthening, etc)
  • Roll out a Shoreland Stewards recognition program.

2020 Budget Needs

The Shoreland Stewardship program is a DIY (Do It Yourself) program, so has no budgetary needs this year.  This program aims to build awareness, confidence, enthusiasm, and pride in solutions on our member's properties.
