The Septic System Health Program
This program is new and is aimed at reducing unnatural levels of nutrients, bacteria, and toxins through our septic systems and to the lake. There are probably many things that we all would be willing and interested in doing that would improve the function of our systems - being mindful of what goes into our drains, keeping to a schedule of pumpouts, and keeping roots out of our drain fields for example. This program will aim to improve our understanding of and proper use and and care for our systems to give us the opportunity for continuous improvement of the function and value of these systems.
2019 Achievements
This program is new in 2020. We are pleased to have a leader, Jody McKee, step up to shape and lead this Program in 2020.
2020 Plans and Aspirations
- Recruit one or two more people to join the septic health team.
- Complete the MSU Extension Introduction to Lakes online course from 1/14/20 to 3/13/20.
- Attend MSU Extension seminar on algae bloom to learn about possible links to septic systems. Post findings on FB.
- Produce communications to members to emphasize the need to “reduce unnatural sources of nutrients” - especially as it relates to how our septic systems are used and maintained.
- Distribute MSU Septic System Management informational "file folder".
- Look to host a field event at a new septic system installation for education purposes.
- Explore the possibility of a pump out rotation program to make it simple and cost effective to get on a routine system of maintenance.
- Determine the required timing for next leachate detector of conductivity project (last performed by Tip of the Mitt in 2005).
- Explore options for members to learn about their leachate detector scores, if desired.
- Research what state, county or township codes or ordinances have jurisdiction (if any) over septic systems in the vicinity of Black Lake.
2020 Budget Needs
The Septic System Health Program requests a budget in 2020 to cover a field event, printed materials, and some mailing costs. Our request is that the BLPS allocate $500 to Septic System health in the year of formation of this Program in 2020.
2020 Volunteer Needs
This program is in need of at least two volunteers to assist with executing this aggressive plan.
